FORMAT 5.8
FORMAT58.EXE is a simple format shell that will format both high and
low density disks with or without the system boot files. It will require
that you have a copy of the DOS format file in the path to operate
correctly. The easiest way to achieve this is to place the FORMAT58.EXE
file in your DOS directory, or into a utility directory that is also in
your path.
This program is configured for an AT compatible system with a 5¼"
drive A and a 3½" drive B, and is compatible with DOS versions 2.0 on up
to DOS 5.0.
A special characteristic of DOS 5.0 is the ability of the format
utility to store a hidden `unformat' data file in the root directory on a
previously formatted diskette. If you later decide that you were in
error by formatting the disk, you could use the DOS unformat utility to
`magically' restore your disk to the previous condition! FORMAT58.EXE
will default to this SAFE FORMAT mode, so if you type FORMAT58 and hit
the ENTER key, this is what you'll get! To the left of the copyright
notice you will see SAFE FORMAT displayed. For more information about
this format mode please refer to your DOS 5 manual.
FORMAT58.EXE also supports the UNCONDITIONAL format mode, or the
FAST FORMAT. This option will NOT save an unformat data file and you
will NOT be able to restore the diskette after you use this mode! This
is of little consequence to most individuals because the only time they
format a disk is when the disk is new, and there is no real information
on it anyway! This mode is invoked by typing FORMAT58 /U and hitting the
ENTER key. Being that this mode does not save an unformat file, you will
have more room for your data or program files, and you won't waste any
valuable time saving that recovery file! This is the mode to use if you
feel that a person who accidently formats an important diskette gets what
he or she deserves! You will see FAST FORMAT displayed to the left of
the copyright notice while in this mode.
While I would never ask for anyone to pay for such a modest utility,
if you feel that this program somehow makes your life a little easier,
you can send me a small donation that will in turn make my life a little
easier... <smile>...
FORMAT58.EXE was compiled with Power Basic 2.10a on September 2, 1991.
